Dinxperlo town square is officially open

Last week marked the official inauguration of the newly renovated Prins Clausplein square in Dinxperlo. This transformation represents the first tangible step in a broader vision for revitalising the town centre. The opening ceremony was attended by Alderman Ted Kok, along with local residents and business owners. To celebrate the occasion, a festive programme was organised, featuring a market, children’s activities, and an open-air cinema.

Previously a paved car park primarily used by visitors during the Friday market, the area lacked greenery, shade, and character. It has now been transformed into an inviting, green ‘town living room’.

The addition of trees and vegetation along the streets and the square offers natural solutions to reduce heat stress and prevent waterlogging. Rainwater is stored underground and reused to irrigate the greenery. Slower traffic and more space for pedestrians and cyclists improve safety and encourage active use of the area.

The square now invites people to linger at the tiered seating along the event field. An interactive fountain creates a more welcoming public space, while providing cooling during warm days.

The renovation of Prins Clausplein is part of a broader vision for the town centre’s upgrade, including nearby streets like Heelweg, which is shared with the German village of Suderwick. This rare cross-border project reflects a strong Dutch-German cooperation and aims to foster a shared identity across this area.

A collaboration seeking to push frontiers

Dinxperlo is a border village where cultures come together, a feature which is currently barely visible. Working close together with local residents and the construction team, we have made a redesign for the village centre that will strengthen its character, increase the quality of stay, and make sure it is future-proof.
