Spuiplein completed: a renewed green-blue heart for The Hague!
Following its completion at the end of last year, Spuiplein in The Hague has been transformed into a vibrant, green, climate-adaptive public space at the centre of the city’s cultural district.
Spui as an urban driver
The Spui, a historic tree-lined commercial promenade, forms a central space that supports local commerce and access to essential services. Rather than viewing Spuiplein as an isolated square, our design approached it as part of a larger urban structure. Building on the Spui as a key city axis, the project strengthens visual and spatial connections between the city centre, cultural institutions, and surrounding public spaces through strategic sightlines and improved orientation.

A cultural living room
At the same time, Spuiplein responds to contemporary urban challenges. The renewed square creates room for everyday life as well as cultural events, while addressing climate adaptation through a strong green-blue framework of generous planting, permeable surfaces and integrated rainwater management. Spuiplein is designed as an inclusive place where nature and culture meet, transforming a predominantly stone-paved city space into a welcoming urban oasis for The Hague.
