Empower Shack community centre in Cape Town is open!
Just last month, our partner Martin and our associate Giuliana travelled to South Africa to witness the transformation of this residential neighbourhood.
The opening of the community centre marked the final phase of this pioneering initiative tackling uncontrolled urban sprawl in South African townships.
By finding smart solutions to integrate green and accessible public spaces we are proposing a new approach to tackling the challenges of urban sprawl in townships. The focus on creating highly social and community centred areas ensures that the residents can now enjoy a better-connected and safer environment.
“With this project we seek to elevate the living conditions of local residents through a holistic approach, that includes neighbourhood development, job opportunities and the provision of vital infrastructures like public spaces, services, and play facilities.”

Apart from the public space transformation, our addition of a self-sustaining aquaponics rooftop farm in the community centre became the key highlight. With educational programs in the works essential skills will be transferred to the community, ultimately helping to boost the local economy.
We are on a mission to inspire even more transformations across South Africa, addressing housing shortages and creating quality public spaces integrated with sustainable and communal facilities, all possible through inspiring collaborative process with UTTE, Riverside consultant, Namene Solar, Redirect Energy, Aztec Agri Systems.
