Clogheenmilcon Fen as a new nature destination for Cork!

Our design helps unlock the wetland landscape of Clogheenmilcon Fen as a new nature destination for Cork and its surrounding towns! We developed a design proposal that helped Cork City Council reveal new possibilities for this remarkable wetland landscape. Located just east of Blarney, the 100-hectare fen is a rare ecological habitat and natural floodplain shaped by the River Blarney. Our aim is to strengthen the connection between people and nature, while protecting the site’s rich flora, fauna, and heritage.

Rather than treating the site as a park, our design approaches the Fen as a living wetland system, where ecology remains at the centre. Interventions remain light and minimal, responding to existing hydrology, floodplain conditions, and natural topography rather than reshaping them.

New looped walking paths guide visitors through woodland and open wetland, with viewpoints offering panoramic glimpses across the Fen. Community spaces such as an amphitheatre and picnic areas create opportunities for gatherings, learning, and cultural events, while a viewing tower and discreet birdwatching structures bring visitors closer to wildlife without disturbing it. Thoughtful entrances, signage, and site furniture give the Fen a clear and welcoming identity, inviting exploration and discovery.

“Our approach was simple: let the landscape lead.

The result is a design that celebrates the Fen’s ecology and invites meaningful exploration of the wetland.”
