Sustainable neighbourhood renewal in Neede!

Together with the municipalities of Berkelland and Dusseldorp, we are transforming Neede Noord Oost into a vibrant, sustainable and inclusive neighbourhood with smart, small-scale interventions that enrich the public space, strengthen social ties, and promote climate resilience.

Creator of meaningful places

At the foot of the Needse Berg lies the neighbourhood of Neede North-East, home to 1,300 residents and full of ambition. The municipality has chosen us to transform the area into a greener, more social, and age-friendly community.

Through the redesign of public spaces and the renewal of the sewer system, we aim to create a vibrant neighbourhood where play, exercise, and social interaction go hand in hand with climate-adaptive solutions.

To realise these ambitious goals, we focus on smart, small-scale interventions with a big impact. By reusing materials and integrating maintenance into the design from the outset, we keep the project sustainable and manageable.

Streets shaped by the landscape

Based on the height difference and the history of the district, we identified three types of streets: historic, stream, and sponge streets.

Water was given a central role in the design, both functionally and experientially. Residents can visually follow how rainwater is collected and used throughout the neighbourhood, recognise the high and low points in the terrain, and understand how water is reused – making climate adaptation both visible and tangible.

This past weekend, we organised a community engagement event to present our development plans to the residents. To bring our vision to life, we printed the design of the neighbourhood on a large carpet and set up a small fair to talk to residents and hand out flower bulbs and sunflower seeds.

Events like this are intended both to showcase our vision for the neighbuorhood and to gather valuable feedback. This helps us gain a better understanding of the needs and wishes of the community, essential to shape a design that truly contributes to the residents’ quality of life.

Our expertise in water management and climate adaptation aims to create neighbourhoods where people of all ages can thrive, even as the climate grows wetter and hotter. This project shows how integrating rainwater design can enhance urban spaces, improving both community resilience and green infrastructure.
