OKRA landschapsarchitecten has been awarded the 2019 Water Resilient Cities Award for the best Sustainable Drainage Systems in a constrained urban setting for our work in the centre of Nijverdal, the Netherlands.
The redesign of the center area of Nijverdal offered OKRA a wonderful opportunity to transform the center area into an attractive, lively and meaningful place that is friendly and welcoming with plenty of room for pedestrians. Sustainable technical solutions for water management, water collection and drainage make the central area climate adaptive, resistant to recent climate developments with periods of more extreme precipitation as well as periods of extreme drought and heat in the summer. Rainwater is stored under the pavement to provide the trees with sufficient water and to feed a water playground with fountains.
The design was created in close collaboration with residents and entrepreneurs, the municipality of Hellendoorn and Dusseldorp ISM.
