A Park for the District
Due to a systematic decline in population, the region of Parkstad Limburg is investigating methods in how to deal with increasing vacancies, liveability and environmental quality in the different neighbourhoods. In the Lichtenberg district of Landgraaf, for this reason, a large number of houses have been demolished with only a modest amount of homes being rebuilt. OKRA developed a proposal, together with residents, the housing corporation and various welfares, for the design of City Park Lichtenberg. The park will become a recognisable and attractive park, creating a meeting place for the neighbourhood.
Living Room
Lichtenberg Park brings cohesion and connects the district with the centre of Landgraaf and the surrounding landscape. The park is conceived as a ‘living room’: spaces for use and meeting for all ages. In order to create this, the park has clear zoning in busy and quiet areas. The park is easily accessible for the elderly and challenges users to exercise more. A diverse and colourful planting strengthens the park atmosphere.
Example for the Shrinking Area
The design includes all requirements regarding routes and accessibility, creating meeting places, a colourful park and an enclosed park. Lichtenberg park is a model project for the Parkstad region for development in a shrinking area.
