With the construction of Leidsche Rijn and Business Park Papendorp, the position of Kanaleneiland as a postwar district on the outskirts has changed to a central area in the city. The project ‘Axis Kanaleneiland,’ in which the urban design plan was made by Mecanoo Architects, aims to exploit this new central position. Commissioned by GEM Kanaleneiland – a combination of city of Utrecht, Proper Stok, housing corporation Mitros and Portal – OKRA has defined the detailed design for the public space of the different areas.
OKRA designed a robust public space network wherein flexible developments are possible. It builds on the system of Kanaleneiland: a grid structure in which spaciousness and green structure are two key qualities.
With the development of the renewal area Kanaleneiland aims to transform the currently run down outdoor area into a high quality, vibrant metropolitan area. Additionally, a substantial and varied programme will be integrated, which ultimately will result in intense and vivid use of public space.
